Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter strikes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, a lot of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not handled, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself enough time to view and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises at the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home can start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies could notice increased symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
